Scholar Media Publishing Company (SMP), a legal branch of Scholar International Science and Technology Development Co. Ltd established in 2011 in Hong Kong, China, is an international organization committed to academic journal publishing, publishing services and consulting. Cherishing our original mission to “specialize in academic open access publishing and disseminate research achievements around the world,” we leverage Hong Kong’s role as an international hub, dedicated to establishing a meticulous and efficient publishing workflow, integrating big data and artificial intelligence to create an open, transparent, and traceable publishing ecosystem. We have continuously published internationally influential quality academic journals, showcasing cutting-edge research from China and the broader Pan-Chinese speaking region to the whole world. We foster cross-cultural dialogue and scientific innovation, offering diverse, reliable, and enduring academic value to the global knowledge community.
Our Team & Global Development
To sustain our global development, we have established offices in Beijing and Shenyang, and founded a wholly-owned subsidiary in Shenzhen. Our Hong Kong office is mainly in charge of international distribution, legal and financial affairs, and resource integration. The two offices and the Shenzhen subsidiary in Mainland China are responsible for editorial production, fabrication, promotion, marketing, online technical support, and aggregating various resources within Mainland China. As of December 2024, SMP has provided jobs for over 10 full-time people worldwide. Over 80% hold master’s or higher degrees and enjoy profound research backgrounds, and over 60% are well-versed in open access journal publishing. Furthermore, we boast a pool of over 100 part-time senior editors and a team of over 1,000 medical experts, assuring the quality of our academic content and editorial publishing. Thanks to continuous professional training and standardized process flows, we have forged an efficient and specialized publishing team, laying a solid foundation for our sustainable development in publishing high-quality academic journals.
Publishing & Technology Platform
Regarding our publishing business, we leveraged our academic resources and collaborated with globally renowned publishers like Wolters Kluwer and De Gruyter at the very beginning, founding and publishing several high-impact medical journals, including some titles ranked in the Q1 of SCI and CAS. After years of experience, we have also started independently publishing journals, involving several titles in medicine and education, which have gained wide recognition from their hosting organizations.
Since our inception, we have given top priority to building and optimizing our technological platform. Currently, on the basis of the widely used international Open Journal System (OJS), we have built a comprehensive publishing management system encompassing online submission, peer review, editorial management, typesetting and publication. This has made our journal publishing workflow digital and intelligent. The platform supports multilingual interfaces, cross-timezone collaboration, and ORCID identity integration, ensuring transparent review and academic integrity.
Custom Publishing Systems
To transform towards intelligent publishing with information technology, we have invested in R&D, independently designing and implementing several professional software projects, including automated editing and proofreading software, XML typesetting and transcoding system, production workflow management system, and an Office Automation (OA) system. These initiatives have not only adapted to international publishing trends, but also provided diversified and efficient cooperation options within our publishing workflow.
Our manuscript proofreading and formatting software has incorporated multiple functional modules such as grammar checking, reference standardization, and figure & table layout verification. It can automatically adjust formats in accordance with journal templates to seamlessly integrate with the OJS system. This software has not only enhanced the accuracy and consistency of manuscript editing, but also provided intelligent tool support for collaboration among authors, editors and the typesetting team. In the future, we will continue to expand the application of AI technology in our academic publishing, promoting innovative R&D in peer review assistance, plagiarism detection and content semantic tagging.
Our XML production typesetting and transcoding system supports multi-format output, automatically identifying manuscript structure, format and citation styles upon submission, and supporting one-click conversion from Word to XML, PDF, HTML and other formats. This has significantly shortened the publication cycle, reduced manual errors, improved publishing efficiency, and enhanced multi-channel content compatibility (typesetting system: https://typeset.hxts-bj.com/; production system: https://production.hxts-bj.com/).
Our production workflow management system manages the entire manuscript process flow from acceptance to online publication, encompassing all interactive links between editors and authors from copyediting and proofreading to issue composition and approval. This has enabled full process flow monitoring and automated production tracking.
Our OA system covers finance, contract, human resources and project management modules, providing unified informational support for publishing management and significantly improving efficient team collaboration and transparent decision-making.
Publishing Standards & Community
Regarding publishing standards, all SMP journals have been published under the Gold Open Access model. All editors handling manuscripts here strictly adhere to the ethical guidelines and editorial policies of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME). Our system rigorously follows the manuscript handling workflow involving ethics review, academic misconduct check, publishing license agreement, peer review, editorial decision-making, English language polishing and copyediting, ensuring the quality of our publications and enhancing our publishing reputation.
SMP journals actively participate in academic activities within the industry. We have invited internationally renowned scholars to visit our offices (https://www.hksmp.com/index/news/view/12), and actively promoted our published journals at international academic conferences (https://www.hksmp.com/index/news/view/14). Moreover, SMP also supports events like offline editorial board meetings (https://www.hksmp.com/journals/eer/announcement/view/79). Through face-to-face communication, SMP and scholars have reached broad consensus on journal positioning, scope, editorial board team, publication policies, hot topics and promotion strategies.

Our Management Team
The SMP Logo

The SMP logo uses minimalist lines to outline three core imageries: Mountain (M) as the backbone, River (S) as the vein, and People (P) as the heart. The ‘M’ stands centrally, symbolizing the mountain of scholarship: solid, lofty, and representing the heights of our knowledge pursuit. The ‘S’ winds down from the mountain peak like a flowing river, implying the continuous dissemination of ideas and the unceasing flow of open access. The ‘P’ stands by the riverbank, with its upturned posture supporting the confluence of mountain and water, representing the “people” -- authors, editors, and readers -- who remain at the core of our publishing ecosystem. These three elements combine to form a circle, like concentric ripples from a drop of water falling into a lake. This symbolizes our publishing vision, rooted in China yet radiating around the world, and subtly embodies the Eastern wisdom of the symbiotic coexistence of “Mountain, River, and People”: enduring as the mountains and rivers, with eternal humanism. The overall blue-green gradient shows a sense of technology and vitality, conveying SMP’s brand promise to advance our scholarly achievements to the whole world in a professional, meticulous and sustainable manner.
