Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Drug resistance, often referred to as antimicrobial resistance (AMR), is a growing global crisis that is jeopardizing the effectiveness of antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, and other essential medications. AMR occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi evolve to resist the drugs that once eradicated them or inhibited their growth. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics, both in human medicine and agriculture, have accelerated this process, resulting in a rise in infections that are increasingly difficult, or even impossible, to treat.

The rise of drug-resistant pathogens threatens public health worldwide, leading to longer hospital stays, increased medical costs, higher mortality rates, and the spread of resistant infections across communities. In low- and middle-income countries, where access to healthcare and effective treatments may be limited, the impact of drug resistance is even more severe. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have classified AMR as one of the most significant public health threats of the 21st century.

As the silent epidemic of drug resistance grows, it is crucial to address its underlying causes, the factors contributing to its spread, and the social and economic impact on communities. By understanding the full scope of drug resistance and the vulnerabilities it exposes in healthcare systems, we can create more effective strategies to combat its growing influence on global health.

The aim of this Special Issue, "The Silent Epidemic: Drug Resistance and Its Impact on Communities," is to bring together innovative research that examines the various dimensions of AMR and its far-reaching effects on public health, communities, and economies. We invite both original research articles and comprehensive review papers that explore the mechanisms, causes, consequences, and potential solutions to the drug resistance crisis.

This Special Issue aligns with the journal's scope by focusing on global health challenges, public health policy, healthcare systems, and social determinants of health. It seeks to inform both scientific and policy discussions around AMR, provide insights into effective management strategies, and offer solutions that address the social, economic, and health disparities related to drug resistance.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:

  1. Mechanisms and Drivers of Drug Resistance:Exploring the biological processes and factors (e.g., antibiotic misuse, agricultural practices) that lead to the development of resistant strains of microorganisms.
  2. Multidrug Resistance:Exploring the mechanisms, causes, and consequences of resistance to multiple drugs, and its impact on the treatment of infectious diseases.
  3. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): Investigating the broader phenomenon of antimicrobial resistance across bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and its global public health implications.
  4. Innovations in Drug Development and Alternatives: Research on new antibiotics, alternative therapies, and technological innovations to fight drug-resistant pathogens.

We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews!
